Curator’s Comments:

Knot caught my attention today as much for its intense color palette as the push and pull of sweeping gesture versus more controlled shapes. The title of the piece suggests that the subject turns inward on itself, yet the marks appear more fluid than twisted or convoluted.  The repeated linear striations create a strong horizontal thrust across the picture plane, while the curved arc at the end of the lines suggests a scallop design.  My eye is slowed down by the smaller punctuations of clustered circular shapes and dots.  These forms appear more controlled and specific in their grouping (on the left) or spatial interval (on the right).  There is an interesting figure-ground relationship that appears to contain layered and diffused background color.  It effectively migrates to open white negative space on the right.  These transitions of space and color enhance the sensation of evolution or metamorphosis.
