Curator’s Comments:

Thank you for bringing these two new paintings to my attention.  I enjoy the energy expressed in both, but the spatial relationship between lines and color in KSS9 is particularly effective. The thicker black and red sweeping marks form what appears to be architectural grid work for the more delicate but repeating gestures.  I also appreciate the lighter yellow and grey hues which read as negative space under the lines. They allow the viewer entrance into the otherwise concentrated space. KSS8 shares some of the same rhythm through repetition, but has a choppier overall movement.  I can see vestiges of your sculptures through cantilevered (white) arm shapes.  But for me the density of the black lines slows the visual trajectory. The red shape in the upper right is also very reminiscent of focal elements in your sculpture.  Both works confidently express bold movement and allow for a suspension of visual weight beyond what you can achieve with metal and stone.  They stand alone as paintings, and don’t appear to be studies for three-dimensional works. I would love to see the two dimensional pieces exhibited alongside your sculpture, so that the viewer can appreciate where one movement ends and then picks back up in another rendition.
