Curator’s Comments:

La Fenetre is a wonderful sculpture piece, and as the title suggests, plays with the idea of a window as a sculptural entry into a three dimensional space, or the illusion of one. The figures possess elegant proportions and poses, and appear to be inspired by Art Deco frosted Lalique. The semi-transparency of the forms is measured and controlled as they break from their wooden frame; their legs crossing between designated positive and negative space. The interplay between interior and exterior space is also modeled by the two tone wood grains in the exterior structure, and the square shape exerts an active visual equilibrium.  I like that the male and female figures seem aware of each other, but maintain tension through implied boundaries and separation.  There is a gentle quality to their interaction through luminous, muted color and gestures.  I normally suspect artwork to be larger in life when viewed on a screen; perhaps because of the singularity of the vision on a monitor.  But I actually imagined this piece to be significantly smaller than is noted- possibly because of the intimacy of the interaction, and effervescence of the glass.
