Lemon Sky over Panama City Beach, Florida

Curator’s Comments:
This Lemon Sky beach scene is intriguing in its emphasis on small details- a stylistic approach evident in the other two pieces you’ve posted on the site. I enjoy the visual contrast between the built up architecture along the shoreline, and the manner in which the right side of the painting contrasts with the left. While the large proportion of sky offers the viewer a sense of vast natural expanse, the space still manages to feel slightly congested or compressed because of the details carried through in all of the figures and beach accessories. I’m wondering if this is an intentional portrayal of the popularity of Panama City’s beach. The repetition of the blue umbrellas does provide compositional stability along the beachfront condos, but I find myself moving through the various activities of the figures within the water and sand. It’s as if the painting provides a sense of hyper-reality both in the amount of information and the unexpected violet hues within the yellow tinted clouds, birds and plane.
