Ocean Park is in Puerto Rico, where I lived for almost one year. We lived right near the ocean and that is what inspried this pencil and charcoal drawing.

Ocean Park Storm interests me in its extremely detailed rendering of vast surfaces of sky and water, bringing articulated crests and divots into what was likely a more evenly gradated, or natural value pattern.  At first it seemed as though there was a boat structure in the water’s foreground, but on closer inspection I realized its measured dark patches of water aligned horizontally in the picture.  Small leaves also seem to be incorporated into the waves foam, creating convoluted contours of living sea.  While the sky isn’t as lively and animated as the ocean below, the dark cloud shapes echo the dark organic configurations below. Its interesting that a small slice of land is included in the far right of the picture plane-it stabilizes the flowing movement and offers some visual rest. This heightened sense of awareness and detail is seen within other drawings in your portfolio.  In general, I’m most attracted to the surreal or fantastical landscapes that use what appear to be multiple parts devised from different scenes, as opposed to the straight on animal renderings. While Piglet has a satisfying general presence, it doesn’t offer more complex relationships as in the other abstract or constructed landscapes.
