Curator’s Comment:
The energy and theatrical drama in this work is quite intense, though I don’t comprehend a specific linear narrative. For me the trio of images emerge as archetypal in their transformation of character, rather than though a connection to a precise story. I really enjoy the contrast of the flame infused edges with the smoky interior, and delicate gold chains. I may be overly interpreting the iconography, but for me the physical/architectural structure of the swing ominously predicts a hangman’s gallows. The isolated vignettes of the bird and child successfully provide a hierarchy to the allover active composition, and direct conceptual juxtaposition. The floating cat’s eye also becomes a strong focal presence, reduced to an iconic symbol. While the frame and swing structure are self-containing, the movement throughout the piece, and the right-flying direction of the bird offer escape, and an open visual retreat for the viewer.
