The dim, overcast light captured in the painting Manchester Road sets a melancholy mood. The loosely gestural shadows appear to depict a figure moving quickly through the urban space, but the larger hulking shadows create a stronger visual presence. I find it interesting that these buildings, in their charcoal gray silhouettes, appear to overcome the thin fencing and signpost in the foreground. The thin white trail of smoke emanating from the structure on the left side of the composition animates them further. Looking at your other works on the site I recalled enjoying your exquisite figure paintings. I believe Manchester Road forgoes the human dialogue to create a bleak space that is somehow relenting in its obscurity and at the same time, familiar.
