My friend, Karin Rosnizeck and I began discussing the work of August Macke. She likes the elegant women he sometimes paints. When she asked me for a painting, this piece is the result. A few things were really important to the creation of this work. For example, the shadow became a more distinctive part of the composition after I had a chance to see the work of Andrew Fish. I began to use the textured square pattern after I was introduced to Leon Bakst, particularly the stencils he used to paint a small theatre at the Evergreen Museum, in Baltimore.
