Marlene_Duma.WEB - As an artist I’m interested in the figure and in the portrait. I’m also drawn to the work of other artists who produce art via many different mediums. In this series of portraits, I have chosen images of other artists whom I admire and whose work I find interesting. Here is a portrait of Marlene Dumas, an artist well known well in Europe, North America and around the world.

I can see the influence and aesthetic solidarity with Dumas in your painting, so it is fitting for you to include her among those you admire.  The portrait is a wonderful layering of warm color washes, building up the head to be solid and substantial.  I enjoy the subtle shifts in opacity and tone. The malleability of the edges overall helps convey animated movement and vitality, which is evident in most of your figurative works.  I see the white/negative dripped lines as another layer of diffusion rather than negation; they form a thin veil that serves to soften her direct frontal gaze rather than obscure the emotional contact. Cropping the space tightly, without superfluous objects or environment conveys a feeling of personal intimacy, as if we’re in the close presence of the subject.
