Benches on the boardwalk in Atlantic city in the rain. The foremost benches in the photo were dedicated to a couple that met sitting on the benches and had sat on them every Sunday for 50 years.

Curator’s Comment:

Boardwalk Benches is a handsome image demonstrating a more somber and melancholy mood that I would normally associate with the Atlantic City Boardwalk.  Drenched from a cleansing rain shower, the boardwalk itself is clean and slick, and devoid of both living human presence and residual debris.  The darker shadows and contrast create dramatic effect- as the arched iron arms of the benches wind around in a faintly arabesque curl in the lower right corner of the picture plane. The patterned slats of the boardwalk and bench nicely counterbalance against the remaining reflective architecture before fading off in the distance. While the narrative note explaining the significance of the bench dedication adds to the emotional content of the picture, I also like the vague familiarity of the empty seats.  They hold a strong presence as they remind me of other empty seats, in other places, whose former inhabitants have moved on.
