The Empty Chairs, 100 steel chairs
Miniature steel chairs cascade from the ceiling,
hanging tenuously by a thin string.
Transparent faces attached to the backs of chairs
of women who no longer sit at our table
more empty than not
See your own amongst the others.
The chairs dangle and pool into a common domestic scene, upright chairs around a table, symbolizing the mark or trace of women's cultural significance for centuries, but without their physical visibility or presence. Their absence is a profound reminder of what has been forgotten.
The larger chairs placed in a “circle of memory” invite the viewer to sit and contemplate, discuss, question, as well as provide a quiet place to rest and remember.
