Curator’s Comments:
My Fishtank Life offers a seductive, if encumbered unreal beauty. As an animated specimen, the crane presents as a melancholy bird; airy and white, but entrapped by entanglements beyond its control. The faint mechanical gears around its head appear to exist wholly outside of it, as opposed to the merger of a steam-punk machine-hybrid fantasy. The blood red patch at the crest of the crane’s head at first appears a natural marking, but at closer inspection, a plume of pink (splatter?) pushes away from its source, implying either a cerebral force at work from within, or a traumatic blow inflicted from the outside. The gorgeous blue-green color pooled below is literally swimming with life, but it could also lend itself visually to a further restriction blocking flight or passageway of the crane. In many ways this piece appears quite different from the other winged subjects. Whereas plump bluebirds, sparrows and parrots dominate their physical spaces in fantastic singular portraits, this work appears to be more about the real and imagined interactions and entanglements between living beings. It is both beautiful and vaguely inexplicably painful to look it. But I can’t get enough of it, as it’s a fine piece.
