Curator’s Comment:

There’s a wonderful bucolic feel to this image- the light misty scene reminds me of late 19c. photographs of the American West, when land surveyors and the like trudged out into the pristine meadows with their wet plate emulsions. But rather than appearing romantically nostalgic, or intentionally looking back to the past, it instead seems to be of this timeless space.  The cattle give a living presence to the compositional stillness; the dark animal in the foreground grounds the airy landscape, as it fades up into the sky.  But the animals seem faintly forlorn- though one is tethered by a loose rope, they don’t seem connected to a shelter beyond their immediate place. Like us, they are adrift for a moment. The image is quite haunting, and beautiful.
