GODFATHER

The motive for GODFATHER was taken from a central part of the King Louis XV’s desk which dates back to 1769. All the details, including the musical notes (real song from Godfather move), were done completely from veneer. I spent a lot of time picking, cutting, placing, and gluing only natural wood veneer to create my marquetry.

It’s amazing to see this painstaking art form among a huge variation of contemporary art practice. The piece is beautifully orchestrated (no pun intended) with fluid, easy movement. The subtle value shifts in the lighter floral embellishments balances the graphic dark contrast of the musical score sheets. The oval frame of the image/object also helps move my eye around the work, and assist in the floating suspension of visual weight. I find it interesting, as someone unfamiliar with the range of veneers available, that you were able to obtain cooler bluish tonality from natural materials, as in the spine of the books. While the other two orca based works demonstrate some of the same fine skill in the medium, I don’t find the subject matter as engaging, or as delicately handled. Godfather very successfully plays into a mindset of past generations and the human desire to minutely and obsessively control what could be manufactured with human capability.
