Curator’s Comment:

Bird Boxes is a beautifully ethereal work, with elusive otherworldly color.  The smoky pinkish hues work surprisingly well against the cooler diagonal swaths of blue and green.  I find it interesting that this work is photographically based, and yet employs a strong degree of sensual painterly abstraction.  The few areas of crisp focus provide formal contrast through a glimpse of road signage or mile markers.  It would make sense that the bird houses are cataloged in such a manner, as they appear to stretch out in an open, almost boundless space. I feel the physical structures of the boxes themselves intimate cruciform totems, and add to the feeling of a mystical environment or constructed fantastical landscape.  The later image in the sequence of the tattered white chair and umbrella (MDE3326) is another beguiling piece.  If objects could speak…is at the heart of the romanticized and abandoned personal entity. The injection of subtle staging, elegant composition and muted color moves the viewer to the essential nature of attachment and the ultimately forsaken.
