Shawnee Indian Mask

Hand Crafted from Kaolin Chert, Garnet, Bone, and Black Coral

Shawnee represents a heroic Native American tribe with many great leaders and chiefs. These proud people roamed freely through the Shawnee forest and no one owned the land nor did they have fences. The Shawnee never conceptualized European notions such as want, need, or oppression. All these ideas were introduced through contact with foreigners. I found this headpiece (a Kaolin chert scraper) at Kaolin Pond and had finished this piece the same day. The eyes are made from bone and garnet, while the nose is black coral and the mouth is sterling. The peace joint is made from bone and the garnet represents the cherry.
