Curator’s Comment:

I enthusiastically respond to the simplicity of expression in Phyte. The drawing has a fluid and poetic quality in the horizontal stretch of the figure harvesting the single vertical plant stalk. The elongation of the man’s arm offers an elastic sweep, and the anatomical segmentation of elbow and wrist echo the periodic breaks in the plant. The small radiating lines all around the figures suggest an uplifting sun, and vibrancy in the growth and yield of the crop. I’m unsure what’s happening on the far left margin with small inclusions of color- it looks as though the piece may be bound in a sketchbook, and we’re viewing the unintended seam? I’m also curious as to why you selected this piece for inclusion on the site. It is considerably different formally from the other works in economy of design, and striking, clear concept. Created back in 1998, I’m wondering if it was the seed (no pun intended) of future work.
