Curator’s Comments:

Welcome to the site! I enjoy the provocative portrait Julian you included in your recent post. The construction (or dissolution) of Assange through the shredded paper seems a fitting picture for the controversial figure.  The stark black background nicely contrasts the fragility and transience of the curled paper strips. I can’t tell if his pale skin tone is simply local color, or if the saturation of the photograph was altered to create a diminishing phantom.  Despite the suggestive aspects of the picture, the viewer can bring in her own assumptions about Julian.  Pink Putin, by contrast, sets up the subject to be both omnipotent ruler and emasculated pop icon in bubblegum pink.  The rainbow band along the edge of the piece underscores the later sentiment, while offering a sly nod to color media test bars. For me the topographic contouring of Putin’s face puts a forth slightly eerie mask of live streaming/consciousness and facial recognition software. Both portraits require the viewer to take a new and deeper look at subjects that are at once familiar.
