Curator’s Comment:
I’m drawn to this figure as she retains a self possessed intensity in her compact pose, but I’m not exactly sure what I’m seeing in terms of the formal division of space, or angle of the canvas? The slight abstraction due to the compartmentalized quadrants sets the picture on edge, but the gesture of her head resting on her hands is more restful than agitated. The warm color also suggests psychological tension outside the figure, as she closes into herself with lighter, cooler hues. While this painting is much more representational that your other works posted on the site, I find it curious that Ecstasy and Unidentified Feelings while much more abstract, also contain similar self enveloping shapes, which echo the rounded cocooning pose of the seated figure here.
