Curator’s Comments:

The visceral and engaging diptych Poncho & Lefty appeared today in one of my random views, and I was drawn back in to your process of creating multi-faceted portraits. The excavated found papers certainly add a richness to the finished image, but also a slightly disorientating ambiguity to their origins.  These heads read as mask-like in their abstraction and economic flattening of space, while the inclusion of the figures’ shoulders within the picture plane sets them back in figurative spatial context.  While I had admired and commented on your African Street Mask some time ago, Poncho & Lefty are otherwise devoid of racial or gender cues.  They function nicely as a diptych because of the similar composition and approach, and what is perceived to be a slight value reversal in their background and framing. I also imagine they could stand on their own as singular works.  I do hope you continue to post new work on the site- it was a pleasure to come across these today.
