Curator’s Comment:

A provocative work, Figurescape seems significantly more abstract and elusive that your other pieces on the site.  I like the light opening at the top, which shapes the work into an altered landscape, with a rocky foundation.  The cool hues are dreamy- adding blue and violet haze to the earthy ochre ground.  While the nebulous figure is centrally placed, the lack of specificity and contrast puts more emphasis and interest on the environment.  The piece entitled Portalnu also enjoys a rich ochre ground with cooler undertones, but the heightened realism in the figures removes most of the ambiguity of the figure-ground relationship.  The disembodiment of the head and accompanying torso create a fantastical vista, but the closed eyes of the head keep the mood somber or peaceful rather than detached or psychologically impassive.  While I can’t ascertain scale from the slide, the gestural paint marks in the torso’s back appear quite expressive.  But I imagine on a smaller scale, they could be interpreted as more nuanced.  Thank you for sharing these works- they’re quite strong.
