Curator’s Comments:
Skirt Dancer is a jubilant gestural sculptural work- I like the strength in energy and momentum in what I assume to be cast bronze. The subject matter and rough, tactile handling of the upper body especially remind me of some of Degas’s bronze dancers. But I also appreciate the way the weight of the form is pushed off to the edge of the base, seeming to tenuously balance the figure’s weight. There is also a certain degree of abstraction in the gathered garment; the folds offer a contrasting arrested movement against the more controlled anatomical accuracy of the dancer. But the separate components ultimately connect through orchestrated visual movement. Since this piece is on very small scale however, I’m wondering if it’s a maquette for a larger work.
