Curator’s Comment:

I was thinking there seemed to be fewer sculptures posted on the site over the last few months, and so my search led me to Rhino. At first glance the piece offers exhilarating visual buoyancy as it appears to float slightly above the grass- the cast shadow being peculiar in its contrast despite softer natural light.  The luminous ribbons of yellow-gold appear to stretch with a malleable plasticity, charging the work with a wrought tension.  I was puzzled by the sculptural medium, as equally as delighted to realize these are wholly conceptual constructions. Pisces and Cat are similarly realized as dynamic sinuous abstractions.  But while they’re both individually engaging, for me, their respective landscapes are less assimilated, or adapted to the thrusting movements of the sculptures. When installing them within a quieter park setting, the viewer is able to momentarily suspend their disbelief in realizing the ironic nature of the form and environment.
