Grinding Wheel & Scythe is a motorized installation that utilizes several antique devices. The work has a warm wood and earth feel that attempts to capture the theme of manual labor. Resting on a sawhorse-type frame is a grinding wheel that is driven by an electric motor. A scythe extends from the sawhorse and bends to the floor. A chain dangles from the sawhorse and another is draped from the scythe handle to the floor. Within the frame an antique hammer rests on the grinding wheel. Driven by the motor, the grinding wheel rotates and generates sound. Through the application of audio effects processors the sounds come to evoke murmurs of the past. This work attempts to express remembrance and respect for those who toiled the fields under adverse circumstances.
