Curator’s Comments:
Beautiful silk piece- I’m attracted to the turquoise pool in the center of the image, which spills into the lush green surrounds. I see from comments posted some years back that Gauguin and Rousseau were already referenced, and I can appreciate the influence of subject and style. But I’m also intrigued by less tangible components that give the work a more contemporary feel. The hand painted silk medium may result in crisper edges and a different level of color saturation than paint. And while the overlapping foliage provides for shallow atmospheric space, the continuous detail in the background plants approaches patterned motif rather than traditional figure-ground relationship in landscape. The red-violet striations threaded through the leaves offers strong complementary contrast, further heightening the intensity of hues. Rather than a relaxing natural scene, Respite is a feast for the senses.
