Curator’s Comment:

I find Possible Function appealing because of the distinct ambiguity of the forms having utilitarian origins, as evidenced by the title.  The woven surfaces conjure basket type vessels, but the interiors look unexpectedly metallic.   The rich brown patina, in addition to be aesthetically pleasing, makes one contemplate the age of the objects with their worn, weathered looking shells. The interior shapes also visually contradict the exterior form in a thought provoking way. The convex/concave correlation suggests male-female synchronized parts, or an appositionally dichotomous relationship.  The dimensions indicated suggest to me the work exists on a human scale, further alluding to serviceable or practical function.  I believe Uncommon Ground is a similarly dynamic work, which shares an analogous poetic duality.  There is both harmony and discord in the two tethered forms.  Figurative in nature, the small feet further anthropomorphize the somewhat minimal ‘figures’.   The craftsmanship of all of your work is strong- there’s an underlying truth in raw materials, but their clean presentation and manipulation makes layers of meaning possible.
