Thank you very much for your comment on my artwork. Your comment is highly appreciated, and I felt very touch to see how you were able to describe my expectation with the viewer. Well Done !
Curator’s Comment:
The 3 Cube caught my attention because it seems to be a riff on a Modernist work- a rather minimal geometric painting within a gold painted frame. The hard edges aren’t quite hard enough to fall into the realm of Post-Painterly Abstraction; there seems to be a consciousness of the artist’s hand making a painted work in this piece. Other flatter graphic images in your portfolio disguise the medium and brushstrokes, so I’m seeing a consciousness in that regard. I’m also curious to the attention given to the flat plane versus illusionist window. The simple iconic cubes each highlight one flat side- a complete plane in one cube, but only the bisection of the lines in the remaining two. I don’t observe such obvious spatial tease in the other pieces, but several paintings have a disparate division of shape that also calls the traditional expectation of the picture plane into play. La nuit des folies falls into that category, with the linear division of smooth top and interactive bottom half. Perhaps the evening ‘follies’ are demonstrated in the cluster of erratic geometric shapes in the lower section. The cooler sky area in this context reads as ‘night’. I do wish the digital image was a little more crisp- I’m thinking I’m missing some detail of the painting surface, and there’s certainly a lot going on. These are fascinating works, and I appreciate that they confront the viewer with inventive pictorial solutions.
