Curator’s Comment:
I love looking at what artists are doing with encaustic. The first piece in your series –Timeline- has familiar and luxuriant scraping and scumbled layering of the waxy medium, but on closer inspection I actually prefer the brighter color in the third image, Thermal Nuclear Family. The allover surface pattern of this painting remains unpredictable in the small organic undulations, as the color is complex but pure. Small bits of concentrated yellow ochre and deep pink nicely oppose and counter the cooler blue shapes. These warm/cool temperature shifts underscore the liquid quality of the individual shapes, but the piece doesn’t physically or visually melt into homogenized or generalized neutrality. While there’s no doubt some of the surface manipulation is lost in viewing on a computer monitor, the scale and framed presentation nicely assert the work as a dimensional object as well as image. I hope you continue to post new work on the site.
