Curator’s Comments:

Sad and Alone came up on the site today, and while I reveled in the saturated color and whimsical humor, I was surprised to recognize the piece in the context of your other more subdued (frozen still life) works. The graffiti- like marks and text provide a busy foundation for this painting, but one unified in primary, dark color.  The dinosaur and target add a blast of Pop imagery and hierarchy to the space.  I find it amusing the wide mounted shark appears to emerge from the dense background to chomp on the dinosaur- is this emblematic of their demise? (Or ours?) The title punctuates the humor with its essentially passive connotations and state of mind. The docile text within the work further counters the large physical scale of the painting. Shame and Monsters seems to share an aesthetic sensibility if not sardonic humor.  While the space is a little more open, and the color palette lighter, the piece still presents small attackers on fleshy organic forms.  These are really interesting works.  They draw the viewer in with bold, fresh color, and hold us with layered dilemmas and existential frustration.
