Oil on Linen. 24" x 36" A trip to the Punkin Patch with the grandkids is an annual event in our house, followed by pumpkin carving, a weenie roast, and bonfire. This is a painting using as a reference a photo of granddaughter, Sage, with her creation. I added the wiccan lapel pin to give another layer of meaning to the work.

Curator’s Comments:

Samhain is a wonderful bewitching painting to contemplate on Halloween!  I’ve previously enjoyed the hyper-realism of your other portrait works that slightly and skillfully push beyond expected representation into the realm of fantasy or the ideal.  This piece includes some of that same formal intensity, from the red satiny sheen of the garment to the red-orange saturation of the jack o lantern. This portrait also captures an interesting relationship between the camera, subject and viewer.  While the girl’s expression and pose seem expectant of one posing for a selfie or candid snapshot, the more careful looking associated with detailed (painted) portraits invites a longer viewing.  It’s also curious that despite what seems to be an obviously photographically derived image, the subject is not gazing back at the viewer, but at another “off screen” subject responsible for recording her in the scene.
