This gentleman is not only a chaplain all the time, but he carries the spirit of Christmas within his heart. Every year, he dons the red outfit and fur clothing that tells the world all is not lost. St. Nicholas and the spirit of Christmas are alive and well!

Curator’s Comments:

Santa & Babe is the perfect, idyllic Christmas painting. While the proverbial subject is well-known, the handling of local color and gentle expression offer an intimate and warm exchange. I particularly enjoy the hues within Santa’s beard and white fluffy robe. Subtle warm/cool temperature shifts in the whites keep them well defined, just as the reflective blue and orange tints add animated movement and visual complexity. The background space behind each of the figures also separates them in an interesting way- and yet the mingling of broken, expressive marks allows for visual transition. I do wonder if the green behind the baby was intended to simulate a Christmas tree. I can barely make out spherical ornaments within the greenery. But the diffused edges serve to soften the overall scene and keep emphasis on the two figures. Again, I suspect the work was generated from a familiar holiday photograph, and yet the personal nature of the marks keeps the image fresh and worth a longer look.
