Curator’s Comment:

I like the robust compartmentalization of structure in many of your figure drawings and paintings.  The deliberate fracturing seems Cubistic in its break up of solid planes, but the color effects offer a warmer sculpting of form. This particular piece also beautifully explores alternating levels of semi-transparency and opacity of hue. The broken panes of blue and orange in the background set up a dynamic complementary relationship, as these contrasting tones coalesce within the interior of the composition and torso of the figure.  The twisting gesture of the pose itself calls to mind controposto movement in the disparate forward and back moving weight shifts.  Many of the other figurative movements seem stylized and exaggerated.  Nude at Window, for instance, has an extreme thrusting of the figure’s upper body, creating a curvilinear arch, and seductive “S” design.   The chalky highlights on the figure heighten the luminosity of the flesh tone- keeping the emphasis on the figure within the high chroma, saturated space. For me there is the suggestion of narrative content in many of the multi-figure pieces.  While their relationships aren’t developed in a direct manner, they animate the space and appear to provocatively interact with each other.
