Curator’s Comments:
These acrylic on paper Shadow paintings have an interesting shimmer, and light shift between sweeping sections of slight alternating values. I’m not quite sure if what I’m seeing is reflected light from the glare of the photography, or if in fact there is pure white pigment in the piece. This particular work has an attractively abraded surface; seeming to employ multiple layers of scumbled pale blue tints. The tracks suggest a road or passage through white earth, as in a snow covered ground. I also detect a triadic arrangement of three “stripes” in the picture plane, adding a quiet repetition as an underlying cadence. I will make the criticism however, that some pieces aren’t shown at their best because of the extraneous inclusions in the camera frame. For instance, it leaves me wondering if the slivering of text in the painting titled Breakfast is intentional. The main image appears to be a subtle non-objective expressive work, and the top area is either accident, or an intentionally dissonant contrasting element. Certainly whether or not to consider it as part of the work changes the mood and artistic intent considerably.
