Curator’s Comments:

This painting intriguingly titled Shame popped up under a random search.  I like the painting very much, but am confused about the title attached to what appears to be a somewhat straight forward depiction of Christo’s Running Fence.  On closer inspection, I feel that the style in which the subject is rendered is more organic and slightly more integrated into the rolling landscape than the original work may have been. Thin linear shadows appear to stretch out from the vertical poles of the fence, punctuating its serpentine articulation and undulating segmentation.  The high chroma cerulean blue sky tilts forward in the picture plane rather than recedes because of reversed atmospheric perspective; creating a dynamic complementary relationship with the orange fence, though perhaps at the expense of relaying horizontal distance.  Without obvious clues as to scale, the fence could be construed as a quaintly constructed border, curvilinear and graceful.  Again, nothing intimates that this could be a shameless monstrosity imposed on the land. I find it equally curious, title aside, that this painting shows a significant amount of textural and compositional restraint when viewed with the many lush floral pieces in your portfolio. Jungle Fever and similar works celebrate unabashed abundance and beauty, almost overloaded the viewers sensory appreciation of natural splendor. Perhaps that’s the seduction of Shame; it subtly reveals ambiguous feelings about a large scale project long after its interruption has vanished.
