I really like how striking this piece is. The detail on the wrap is fantastic with the pattern and color combo, and the halo-style illumination around her head is a nice feature. The paleness of her skin and hair is a great contrast to the bright red of the background. Just a very pretty, strong piece.

Thank you for such a wonderful critique.  This painting is one that I wanted to make for a long time.  When it was finished I thought it was too personal a subject (my younger daughter) to make an impact on anyone else and was surprised and pleased when it did!  I would like to paint another "icon" painting of my older daughter - still working on that one in my head.  Thank you again - I'm so thrilled to be part of this group!

I’m very happy to see your new work on the site.  You have a highly evolved signature style, but within your portfolio there is also a sense of renewed discovery through exploratory decision making.  I’m detecting a fresh vitality through your highly ornamental compositions- the swirling linear elements acting as filigree to the gorgeous blocks of jewel like color.  I’m especially attracted to the piece entitled She is Mostly Good, if not for the dichotomous possibility of the title, but the relief and tension the blood red ground provides the delicate features of the young woman.  The smooth floral brocade on her dress and curls at the end of her hair echo the patterned halo above, and establish a highly integrated figure –ground relationship. Your paintings have always reminded me of the late 19th c. Austrian Symbolists, but these most recent pieces seem to inject a contemporary feel into the romanticized feminine archetype.  I feel this image has the quality of a layered drawing throughout the subject’s face and hair, while other more opaque, textural sections create contrast and visual opposition. The move away from central focus and more formidable canvas size also remove the sense that these are personal icons or intimate familial portraits. Instead, the viewer gazes on a beautiful and mostly confident subject, and she steadily returns our stare.  I also find it interesting that the palette of her skin is rather cool, reflecting an inward looking relationship with her dress rather than formally responding to the lavish flickering red surrounding, but not enveloping her.
