My husband said it looks more like a desert because of the sparse trees but I say those are only the tree tops that you can see poking out from the canopy...but I can see his point.

OK, you're approaching the illusion of depth here, in your three midground ranges. Your last range is way too light. You foreground should have the most contrast between lights and darks, the most detail, and the warmest colors. Very nice sky and composition. You can rework this.
