Title: Fox Dan Plug Life - I present to you a bundle of charged, extensive statements. Tapping in to familiarity, Irvine Welsh said it quite poetically: “Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a f****** big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers... Choose DIY and wondering who the f*** you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit crushing game shows, stucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away in the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, f***** up brats you spawned to replace yourself, choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?” Existing is never enough.

I find it interesting that Plug Life takes on a nihilistic tone in the accompanying statement, and yet seems visually the most direct and stylistically representational among your paintings on the site.  While there is some deviation in the local color which adds a rough, abraded quality to the skin, the figure is arguably still classically rendered.  The straight head-on portrait is confrontational, and emotionally arresting. I’m curious about the medium, which isn’t listed, as the piece maintains a painterly quality despite the pixilated choppy texture in the flesh and light colored plugs.  The sharp contrast of the smooth black hood allows for some visual rest in the picture, and then my eye moves back to the variation in the brush marks in the yellow-gold ground.  These mitigated surface qualities soften the mood of the piece somewhat, or perhaps add contradiction to the ironic state of being expressed in the Welsh quote.
