Curator’s Comments:

South Beach was posted to the site several years ago, and yet somehow I overlooked it among your other dramatic photographs.  It is unique and spectacular in its contrast between sharp architectural forms, flat graphic blue and pink hues, and amorphous clouds.  I like that the grouping of structures move off center to the right of the composition, leaving a little more space to lead the viewer across the urban terrain.  However, the absence of an actual ground surface does impart a dreamy quality to the image. The picture is surreal in the lack of specificity in the buildings; without windows or an entrance, the utilitarian function of the structures is subliminally called into question.  We could be looking at a stage set, but then that would not explain the presence of the perfect cumulous sky. The title of the piece suggests Art Deco structures in pastel pinks, but with a decidedly more animated or commercial cache. This South Beach is stripped down to its bare essence of color and shape.
