Curator’s Comments:
Thank you for bringing this new piece to my attention, and requesting feedback. I think there’s something very exciting going on in Star, as the suspension of both the visual and actual weight push beyond the anticipated spatial boundaries. It shares a similar aesthetic and structure with your larger repertoire of sculptures, but the pedestal no longer carries the bulk of the form. The scaled down granite base ultimately appears to be more of a launch pad for a stronger trajectory of the rod pieces- thinning as they move higher up into the air. The taller dimensions indicated on the sculpture support this sensation that the piece is less physically grounded. Is it kinetic? I am aware of your ongoing concerns with the idea of movement, but more related to static and frozen moments of time. Star is still physicality reminiscent of moving mechanisms and aerodynamic technology, but its reach now extends far beyond the compositional origin/foundation. The consistent blue-grey color of all components further creates a unity of elements that were separated out in many of the earlier works.
