Curator's Comment:
While all of your sculptural busts, without exception, have a satisfying life-like presence, Stephanie has a particularly nuanced appearance. Her slightly sober facial expression supports a Classical depiction, as opposed to Felicia or Mariah who both appear more contemporary in their lively animation. The whitish coloration of the plaster may also contribute to Stephanie’s quiet repose. I also respond to what I believe to be looser tactile marks in her coiffed hair and clothing. The tilt of her neck is relaxed, and visually forms an elegant “S” from her shoulders to the top of her head. I was a little surprised to see these works weren’t created on life scale, having such a strong natural representation. In any case, I imagine they would be arresting when viewed in the round, as sculptural forms.
