Still life just painted in Renkum, holland where I am doing an art residency. Started with a raw umber field then added ivory black and then started playing with overlapping forms...all while listening to Miles Davis, thus the title.

Curator’s Comments:

Still life for Miles Davis came up on the site today, and before I read your comment about the musical influence, I looked for visual connections in the painting.  The piece does enjoy a moody tenor, which is punctuated by choppier strokes.  I appreciate the limited color palette, which pushes the range of value, and rhythm between elevated forms.  The simplicity of the shapes deftly reveals the presence of classic still life objects, against a surprising expanse of relatively quiet background.  Looking back through your other works on the site, I remember admiring the juicy brushstrokes in your portraits. They generally employ a broader and lighter color scheme. Still life for Miles Davis also appears to be one of the few paintings with a square rather than traditional rectangular format.  I believe the tension in the space is enhanced by this formal decision, as it asserts a bold duality of light and dark in the composition.
