Curator’s Comment:

The painterly brushstrokes in this piece are lively and nevertheless yielding and soft.  I like the varied size of the color chunks, and uneven edges of the pieces as they build into alternately dense and light, airier sections.  The color scheme put forth is an involved myriad of related complements.  Lower chroma ochre shapes punctuate the field against the pure violet hues. I don’t see evidence of still life as denoted in the title, but the construction of the composition offers solidity through hierarchal shapes, so that all of the space isn’t treated equally.  The companion piece- Landscape configuration copy- has a more direct grounding of the articulated shapes, and thus has a more traditional figure-ground relationship.  I am attracted to the color and texture in that piece as well, as the color floats back and forth between foreground and background.   The ebb and flow of density within an allover treatment suggests the process is as important as the finished image.
