Curator’s Comments:
Maryland’s Best is a wonderful aqueous study. The watercolor washes enjoy a spontaneous quality, while carefully crafting the form of the emblematic New England crab. The small bits of line and texture in the background spatter cause one to meander through the space in a less formal way than the adjacent Bird of Paradise piece. While that picture is also skillfully crafted, I believe the crab maintains a fresh exuberance from the sideways tilting gesture and less controlled background. I also like that the coloration on the shell vacillates between warm and cool hues. While referenced as food, it has a living presence.
