Curator’s Comment:
Sunday attracts the viewer with its layered and stressed surface. The streaks of pink and orange hues within the white “sky” portion of the composition appear to serve as visual remnants of erasure. The vibrant hues of course remain in full force in the bottom plane of the space. There seems to be abstract representations of figures on a ground, but the articulated topography also serves as a purely formal figure-ground connection. I’m curious about the faint central seam running through the center of the piece. Even lighter traces of a border appear and disappear, making me wonder if they are also vestiges of the painterly process, or if the work is intended to read as a diptych. I recognize it as perhaps the lightest piece you have posted on the site. The deeper hues in other works also nicely serve the erosive buildup of paint. But the tinted hues in Sunday captivate in their suggestion that less remains or is ephemeral and unseen.
