Curator’s Comment:
I enjoy how this entire picture seems to swirl in the whirling marks of the rollercoaster and Ferris wheel. The carnival rides seem to combine, and anthropomorphize into a giant fantastical Cyclops creature. The warm hues and vibrant blues capture the mood of a sultry summer day, as the small dashes of white throughout the piece form light reflection. Formally, I like that the water’s edge and top horizon don’t form static horizontal places, but diagonally oppose each other for more movement and visual interest. The degree of abstraction is consistent throughout the work, created a whimsical, animated space. There’s just enough information in the small figures to make out their activities, but the rides remain the main attraction. The piece entitled Green Thumb is also intriguing- sharing the giant spiraling eye shape as its dominant focal element. But the lines and swirls function here are more of a decorative motif than descriptive structural shapes, and the circular oculus as a mandala. The female figure on the left side of the piece appears devotional in her pose and containment of many repeated eyes. While the title simply applies fertility and growth, there’s also a sense of spiritual metamorphosis.
