This portrait has an arresting gaze- it seems part Russian icon, part surreal woman by Remedios Varo. The downward looking eyes are pensive, and stoic- suggesting a far off day dream. The landscape reinforces this drifting world, with somber cool hues. I’m intrigued by what appears to be actual impastoed texture on the collar-along with an encrusted (talismanic?) symbol on the coat. I particularly like that the reference to ‘moon’ is in the title, but is suspiciously absent from the painting. In its exclusion the figure becomes the moon entity- cool, glowing blue.
