Curator’s Comments:
I came across the drawing Taxi Driver today, and had a strong response to the psychological tension between the subjects. In close proximity, the figures confront each other directly, while pulling the viewer into their constricted space. The dark colors in the man’s head on the left injects a seriousness if not foreboding mood into the piece; we don’t see enough of the other to get a read on his features or psyche. I also like the scrawling and calligraphic line work woven through the work, animating their otherwise stoic expressions. They’re interesting portraits, and the subtext of the title enhances the understanding that two strangers are meeting in tight quarters. It’s an everyday experience that becomes something more primal.
