Curator’s Comments:
A Lost Sheep is a sexually suggestive image, as the recumbent male figure in the center signals simultaneously as seducer and youthful prey. His boyish features and stern stare suggest a fleeting series of contradictory emotions and engage the viewer on an instinctual level. I enjoy the graphic blocks of solid value in the compartmentalized windows, alternatingly offering glimpses into an urban or natural landscape or providing blocks of solid grey or white. The rectangles offset the bold graphics of the text in the image. The subtle discoloration in the bottom of the corrugated metal wall is somewhat curious, as it doesn’t hold up to the bright letter on the left side of the “L” in ‘Lost sheep’, but the areas are formally connected as the only detectable warm colors in the piece. The side of the structure itself is also visually perplexing, as it appears superficially constructed, like a theatrical façade. Reflecting the exterior landscape of an impending storm overhead within the window frames additionally mirrors the young man. Both lure the viewer into the space with a promise of terrifying beauty.
