Curator’s Comment:
The black calligraphic lines are forceful in these works- and remind me of Motherwell’s Elegies. The expressionistic mark making that accompanies the lines offer somber color and tonality, and appear to be in part about the process or primal act of painting. I also see remnants of a cruciform shape, or totem because of the strong vertical thrust. The Heartless Hunt (Slaughter) shares this dynamic dark calligraphy, but is more pictographic or symbolic. The centralized heart form drips bright red blood, as the diagonal lines develop into piercing spears. But there is additionally a more restrained, relatively graceful quality to some of the thinner lines. They suggest long legged supports, or architectural structures underneath the injured heart, so while they are actively coercive they ultimately serve to encapsulate it in a smaller space.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
