The Cherokee term, “booger”, refers loosely to any ghost or monster that bursts loudly into the room and launches into a manic display of lewd or aggressive behavior. They also used the term to describe certain ceremonial masks used for a dance ritual. The “booger” masks were used during a ritual ceremonial dance that may have originated as a re-enactment of DeSoto’s brutal conquest of their homeland. These masks were also aimed at ridiculing strangers that didn’t act properly or intelligent.
